Dr. Thomas Barker, 89, of Huntsville passed away on December 31. A native of Camus Washington, he had lived in Huntsville for the past seven was a graduate of the University of Puget Sound and served as a Lieutenant in the Navy during World War II.

He attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. Upon graduation in 1950, he moved to Darien Connecticut where he established a successful dental practice and made numerous contributions to the community including Boy Scout Master, police commissioner, president of the Kiwanis Club, member of the library and school boards and coach of the 1958 Little League Team which made it to the World Series in Williamsport Pennsylvania.

In 1968 Dr Barker left private practice and assumed the responsibilities of Professor and Dean of Admissions at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry. His tenure there included the development of dental programs in Egypt, Jordan and Libya.

He retired to Reno Nevada in 1987 and taught in the Humanities Department of Truckee Meadows Community College. In Huntsville, Dr. Barker continued his love of teaching through volunteer work at Calhoun Community College and Lincoln Elementary School, and his passion for baseball through work with the Huntsville Stars which became his “home” team.

Dr. Barker is survived by his sons, Rodney Barker of Scottsdale Arizona, Dr. Gary Barker of Bar Harbor Maine, Bradley Barker of Santa Fe NM.
