Thelma May Alonso, 95, of Clarksburg, WV, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the United Hospital Center, Bridgeport, WV. She was born on March 8, 1916 in West Virginia. Thelma was preceded in death by her mother and father Hattie and James Pope, her husband Roman Alonso (d. June 2001), her brother Raymond Pope (d.2003) her sister Winifred Flaherty Minehart (d. June 2007)and step-son, Roman Alonso III. She was beloved by her surviving family members, including sisters Wilma Alonso (Clarksburg) and Louetta (husband Dick) McCobb (Lima, Ohio), sister-in-law Mary Pope (Houston, Texas), and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, and 3 step-grandchildren,( all of California. ) Mrs. Alonso served her country as a WAC staff sergeant from 1943-1946. She was also employed as an office worker by Fourco Glass Company in Clarksburg and by the US Government in Washington, DC. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clarksburg. She enjoyed her family, gardening, reading, and helping others at the Mustard Seed. Thelma was an avid listener and a great conversationalist, and she will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
