Williamsport, MD – Thelma Irene (Hockenberry) Mellott, 91, of Downsville, MD passed away on Wednesday August 31, 2022 at Homewood at Williamsport. 

 

She was born on November 6, 1930, in Downsville, MD to the late Roy McClellan and Nona Irene (Roberts) Hockenberry. 

 

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, James Russell “Shorty” Mellott in 2015. 

 

She was a 1948 graduate of Williamsport High School in Williamsport, MD. 

 

She was a member at Downsville Christian Church in Downsville, MD. 

 

Thelma and her husband, Shorty, lived in Downsville, raised a family, and ran a successful Holstein Dairy farm for many years. Growing up she was a 4-H all-star and was later crowned Miss Washington County Farm Queen in 1948. Thelma was a Washington County contract school bus driver (7C) for over 40 years. She was an active member of the Downsville Christian Church for her entire life and served in many capacities such as: Sunday school teacher, director for vacation bible school, and volunteer camp cook at Camp Mary Mac. She was creative, active, and always learning new things. She was an expert seamstress and made prom dresses, wedding dresses and tailored jackets, trousers, etc. for her family. Thelma was a member of the Embroiders Guild of America, won many awards for her needlepoint and folk painting, and enjoyed square dancing and bowling. She was inducted to the Women in Sports Hall of Fame for her achievements with the Williamsport High School state champion women’s basketball team in 1948. 

 

She is survived by her daughter, Debra Irene Mellott of Frederick, MD; son, James “J.R.” Russell Mellott II and his wife Carol of Williamsport, MD; son, Douglas Mellott and his wife Deena of Halfway, MD; son-in-law James Melonas of Columbia, MD; sister Shirley Hockenberry Rhodes of Downsville, MD; sister Nancy Hockenberry Britner of Carmichael, PA; grandchildren G. Mark Melonas and his wife Sara Daly of Baltimore, MD, James E. “Taki” Melonas and his wife Margee Haines of Asheville, NC, Whittney Mellott-Hoch and her husband D.J. of Williamsport, MD, Leah Davoli and her husband Matthew of Fayetteville, NC, Tyler Mellott of Hagerstown, MD, Ethan Mellott of Hagerstown, MD, great grandchildren Zoe Melonas, James Melonas, Orrin Melonas, Charisma Mellott, Lilli Hoch, Emma Hoch, Hannah Hoch, and many beloved nieces and nephews. 

 

She is preceded in death by a daughter Jacqueline Mellott Melonas, sister Patsy L. Hockenberry, and brother Paul M. Hockenberry.
