Thelma Eva Jackson Joiner Gorney died peacefully in her sleep on January 16, 2016, short of her 99th birthday. She was born on a ranch in Pearl, New Mexico on February 17, 1917, first child of Ora Willis Jackson and David Crockett Jackson. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, O.G. Joiner, and A.A. Gorney, Jr., and sister, Mildred A. Jackson Price. She is survived by sister, Ora L. Jackson, daughter, Barbara Joiner Young, sons, Gary Joiner and wife, Shirley Kirby Joiner, Jay Joiner and wife, Kathleen Murphy Joiner, all of Boerne, grandchildren, Marc A. Young and wife, Karen Bauer Young of Dripping Springs, Pam Young Luciani and husband, Dave, of Boerne, Shawn Joiner and wife, Brandie Schmitz Joiner of Victoria, Carl Stone and wife, Tanda Stebner Stone, of Brookshire, great-grandchildren Elizabeth Young White and husband, David, of Austin, Christopher Young and wife, Daniella Mason Young, of Nashville, Bradley Young, of Kingwood, Mason Joiner, of Victoria, great nephew, Morgan Price, and great-great niece, Jaden Price, of Pennsylvania, and step-son, A.A. Gorney, III, of San Antonio.Thelma was an accomplished pianist and organist, an avid reader, and loved to write and paint. She received a BA and MA from Texas Tech, the only student to graduate with high honors in her Masters graduating class. She loved teaching and taught “her kids” for over 40 years in Ballinger, Rising Star, Lubbock and at the army base in Puerto Rico. When she retired, she and Mr. Gorney moved to El Paso. After Mr. Gorney’s death, Thelma moved to Boerne in 1998 to be near her family.The family wishes to express its gratitude to Heritage Place Assisted Living staff members for their loving care over the past 8 years and to Alamo Hospice for their support and care during these last days.
