Thelma Elizabeth Barrow Cox, age 92 of Sharpsburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 18, at Newnan Health and Rehabilitation. Mrs. Cox was born in Coweta County on December 9, 1925, to the late Homer and Sallie Osborn Barrow. She grew up with a brother and two sisters. In addition to her parents and brother, Thomas Melvin “Brother” Barrow, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years.

She met Joseph Egleston Johnston Cox, Jr. in 1946, and after only three months of dating they shared a double wedding on June 25 with the late Harold and Ruth Grimes Floyd of Newnan. Mr. and Mrs. Cox had four children together. The two owned and operated Cox’s Grocery in Raymond from 1951 to 1963. In 1966, Mrs. Cox became the head bookkeeper at PAPP Clinic until she retired (a second time) in 1992. The couple shared a love of traveling, fishing, and tending their annual garden together. Mrs. Cox was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for many decades and was a longtime member of Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church in Sharpsburg. She lived a meaningful life and went by many names—Mama, Memaw, Grandma, Sister, and Miss Thelma.

She is survived by sons Bill Cox (Jean), Jody Cox (Jean), and Eldon Cox (Debbie); daughter Kathy Cox Moore (Marvin); 10 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dear sisters Catherine Storey and Betty Sue Colwell (Dave), and many nieces and nephews.
