Tessie “Pohoda” Oakes, 87, of Milford, beloved wife of Clifford Oakes, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2014 surrounded by her family and close friends at the West Haven VA Medical Center after a brief illness. Born on March 16, 1927 to John & Mary Pohoda in New Haven, Tessie grew up in the Legion Avenue neighborhood and attended Troup Junior High perfecting her lifelong hobby of reading. Graduating from New Haven High School, she became a Red Cross Representative where her compassion and concern for others quickly became evident.
At home, a need to help other people lead her to become a foster parent to several wonderful children. Tessie’s home cooked dinners and famous cookies were always a welcome addition to Sunday’s and holidays for both family and friends bringing joy and fond memories to all.
In addition to her husband Clifford of 64 years, Tessie is survived by her children Kenneth Oakes & wife Deborah of New York, Donna Saddler & husband Albert of Florida and Clifford Oakes & wife Peg of Milford and sister Olga Hucul (husband George deceased) of CT; her grandchildren, Ken Oakes Jr & wife Tammy of Milford, Kelly Oakes & (spouse) Andrea LeClair of MA, Robert Oakes & wife Nika of Vermont, Sean Rice & wife Desarae of Mississippi, Corey Rice & wife Kristie of North Dakota, Jeremy Oakes & wife Michelle of Milford, Shannon Giancola & husband Louis of Milford, Kathryn Krock & husband Steve of Indiana and 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters: Helen Castro, Stella Bruchowsky, Mildred Korzick and by brothers, Walter Marias, Theodore Pohoda and Alexander Pohoda .
