Mr. Matthews peacefully passed away at a local hospice facility.

TEA R. MATTHEWS was born in Tiller, Arkansas, just outside Little Rock on February 2, 1921. He was the youngest of four children born to the late George and Cora Lee Matthews. Tea had two brothers and one sister all of whom preceded him in death.

Tea relocated to Detroit, Michigan while a young man where he met the love of his life, Versie Lee Hursey. They fell in love at first sight and were married the very next day.

Tea and Versie soon moved to San Diego, California and decided to make it their permanent home. This couple was blessed with three children, Cassandra, Darryl and Theo. Tea united with Logan Temple A.M.E.

Tea, a hardworking man, was always a good provider for his family. He first found employment in San Diego parking cars Downtown. He later entered the building construction industry and became educated and skilled as a cement finisher. He worked construction most of his life.

Tea retired late in life to be able to spend more time with his wife. He enjoyed their time together, especially doing what they loved most, fishing. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary and renewed their vows at the home of their daughter and son-in-law. Tea took care of his wife and personally cared for her when her health began to fail. He stood by her until her death September 13, 2009 being blessed with sixty-four years of marriage.

God called him from labor to reward on September 29, 2013. He leaves three children, Cassandra Streeter (Bobby Sr.), Tee Darryl and Theo Matthews; fourteen grandchildren; special daughter, Marlene Whitaker and a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends who will miss him.
