T. Joseph “Joe” Loy, 74, of Newington, died peacefully in his sleep on November 9, 2022, after a battle with dementia and related ailments. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Leanna Loomer; his son, Brendan; his brother, Robert; his daughter-in-law, Rebecca; his grandchildren, Jess, Caroline and Samantha; and his cats, Little Grey and Whitey.
Joe was born in Hartford on February 14, 1948, to the late Tom and Helen (McNamara) Loy. Growing up in the 1960s, Joe famously became a fan of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and of Barry Goldwater. Although Joe’s conservatism later waned, his love of Irish music never did, and he is surely now wearing an argyle sweater and playing the tin whistle up in Heaven. Unless, of course, he’s out fishing.
Joe took Leanna to a Clancy concert for their first date in 1976, and the rest was history. They were married in 1977, and had their only child, Brendan, in 1981. A devoted father and husband, Joe was also a dedicated public servant, working in elections administration for more than three decades at the Connecticut Secretary of the State’s office. He was also active in the state employees’ labor union, as a onetime union steward and a former A&R vice president.
