Sylvia Renaud, the daughter of Weitze and Catherine Brand Kooistra, was born May 18, 1914 on a farm near Kellogg, Iowa. She was the fourth child of a family of three brothers and six sisters.
Sylvia graduated from Lynnville High School in 1930, then enrolled in a teacher’s training course at Iowa State Normal School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in country schools in the Sully and Kilduff area for seven years. Sylvia enjoyed her vocation, was a disciplined and conscientious teacher, and influenced the lives of many children.
Sylvia was united in marriage with Clarence Renaud on November 17, 1939 in Marshalltown, Iowa. They became the parents of three daughters and three sons. Except for two years spent in Phoenix, Arizona, she was a lifelong resident of the Lynnville-Sully area.
She went to her eternal home on Monday evening, January 14, 2008 at the Pella Regional Health Center – Long Term Care at the age of ninety-three years, seven months, and twenty-seven days.
Sylvia accepted Christ as her Savior as a young woman, and lived a life of faithfulness to Him.
Music was the joy of her life and hospitality was her hallmark.
Those left to honor Sylvia’s memory are her children and their spouses: Judith and Dean Baarda of Scottsdale, Arizona, Georgia and Bela Varga of Dayton, Tennessee, Lilyan and Conrad Eliason of Kuroki, SK, Canada, Doug and Glenda Renaud of Leesburg, Texas, Greg and Janet Renaud of Pella, and Dean and Sharon Renaud of Sully. She leaves seventeen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Of her original family members, these survive: Frances Van Wyk and Virgil Kooistra of Sully, and Velma DeBoef of New Sharon.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Renaud in 1997; her parents; three sisters: Lenora Reynolds, Edna Vande Krol, and one in infancy; and two brothers: Bernard Kooistra and Dave Kooistra.
Silvia Renaud lived her life with grace and died with dignity. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
