Sylvia Murray, 93, of Boise, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2009 at Marquis Care at ShawMountain.

Sylvia was born August 19, 1915 to Ester and Nathan Lowenstein in New York, New York.  She attended public schools and graduated from WadleighHigh Schoolin 1932.  She then attended the New York CityCollegewhile working as a volunteer-nurse’s aide in a local hospital.  She was also employed as a bookkeeper for a NY merchandiser.

Sylvia took a serious interest in art and met her future husband, Murray, while painting and taking art classes in Greenwich Village.  They married and moved to Floridabut found it difficult to make a living there.  A friend suggested that they might like Idahoso they moved to Idaho Falls.

Here, Sylvia worked for the State of Idahofor the Council on Aging as a bookkeeper.  Murraydied in 1980.  After retiring, Sylvia decided to complete a college degree.  She received her BA in Fine Arts in 1991.

She then took extensive training and became involved in completing Federal and State Income Taxes for seniors and anyone else who needed help.  For a few years, Sylvia and others would even set up tables outside at the post office to help last-minute filers finish their returns before midnight on the 15thof April.  One year, she was chosen as a “Seven’s Hero” because of her untiring work on filling out tax forms for people.

Sylvia had a very sharp mind, loved all kinds of activities such as crossword puzzles, scrabble, and especially bingo.  She went faithfully on Thursdays to the SeniorCenterfor Bingo where she made many wonderful friends.  Other hobbies included Elder Hostelling, reading, crocheting, weaving, and knitting caps and booties for preemie babies at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Sylvia was preceded in death by a twin sister, who died at birth; and her brother, Al Lowen in 2008.  She is survived by a nephew, Fredrick Lowen and his wife, Cheryl; and a grandniece, Sonia; and other cousins.
