Sylvester Postolka
Sylvester “Sy” Postolka, age 86, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.
Sylvester was born at Vining, Iowa on May 17, 1919 to Stephen and Mayme (Hulka) Postolka. His early life was lived at Elberon, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Elberon in 1937.
On May 28, 1940, Sylvester married Mabel Nebendahl at the Methodist Parsonage in Toledo, Iowa. To this union two sons were born: Steven and Bruce.
Sylvester served in World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, the Phillipine Liberation and the Army of Occupation in Japan.
In early years, Sylvester did local trucking and later, for 36 years, was a Station Agent for the Chicago NorthWestern Railroad. The family lived in many towns along the CNW rail line, always moving as stations were closed. His last railroad job was at Alton, Iowa but the family had lived in Sioux Rapids since 1965. Sylvester retired from the railroad in 1979.
His greatest joy in life, besides his family, was music. He began playing with local dance bands while in high school. Wherever he he lived he played with bands in that area until his health prevented him from playing. He played his tuba for the last time at the Sioux Care Center.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel; son Steven (Jeanette) of Winthrop Harber, Illinois; and son Bruce (Patty) of Sioux Rapids; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents and only sister, Delores.
