Sylvester Hiawatha Green was born December 2, 1932 to Jesse “PaPa” Green and Mary Frances Green in Marengo County, AL. He departed this earthly life, Thursday, June 24, 2021.
Sylvester attended school in Bessemer, AL. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army September 5, 1951 at the age of 18. He received an honorable discharge September 4, 1954 after three years of loyal and dedicated service.
After the military, Sylvester found employment with the United States Pipeline Steel Industry in Bessemer, AL. He enjoyed working in the steel industry. He had lots of great stories that he shared with the family from time to time.
Sylvester married the love of his life Annie Heard B. Green. To this union three children were born, Sylvester Jr., Terry and Annie.
Sylvester, affectionately known as “Uncle Buddy” and “Maine Joe” was a tough man; however, never complained about anything. When he was a young man, an incident happened to one of his extremities, and he didn’t cry even though the family knew he was in excruciating pain. That was amazing. He also had a sense of humor. Sylvester gave nicknames to all of his closest relatives. It is so amazing that the younger generation knows the real names. Most of all, he was a God fearing man, and continued to pay his tithes at New Bethlehem Baptist Church, even when he was sick. He always quoted, “I’m here by the grace of God” and believed he and the Father were one.
In Sylvester’s younger years, he learned how to play the piano and became very good at it. He didn’t need to read sheet music because he memorized all the songs. From time to time, he would be one of the opening acts before the well-known groups came on the stage which he thought was so amazing.
Sylvester relocated to Raleigh, NC in 2010 to be closer to his daughter. She learned that he was a man of patience. Those life lessons will forever be in Annie and her children’s hearts.
Sylvester was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Green; parents, Jesse “PaPa” Green and Mary Frances Green; and siblings, James May, Jessie Green Lavender “Boo”; Nancy Green Johnson “NeeNee”, Amie Louise Green “Baby-Sis” and Doris Washington “BigD”.
Sylvester leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Annie Green Cooper of Raleigh, NC; sons, Sylvester H. Green, Jr. and Terry J. Green both of Bessemer, AL; grands, Tiara Green, Kindel Reddick, and JayQuan Hill Green, Rodterrius Green; great-grandchildren, Teresa Howard, Ayden Green Jones, and Raiya Stephens Green; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
