He was the fourth child of seven born to his parents, Howard A. Hobbs and Nettie Louise Davis Hobbs, in Denver, Colorado. He was raised surrounded by his brothers, Timothy, Gregory, David, and his sisters, Cindy and Bridgette. He was educated in the public schools of Denver, Colorado.
On November 14, 1979, Sydney enlisted in the United States Army.
