Sydney was born on March 8, 1931, in Harlowton, MT to parents Nicholas David Muir and Alice Schwindt. She grew up on the Muir cattle and sheep ranch two miles west of Harlowton. She attended schools in Harlowton beginning the first grade in the building that is now the Wheatland County Court House, continuing her education in the Harlowton Public Schools and Billings Business College.

On March 8, 1958, Sydney married who would become the sole love of her life, Jack Furst, in the 1st Presbyterian Church in Billings. They lived and worked on the family ranch until 1963 at which time they moved to Havre where they raised their son and daughter. During that time, Sydney was employed by Northern Montana College as an Executive Assistant to the Dean of the Vocational Technical Division. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, as well as being a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Havre. In 1979, the family moved to St. George, UT where they lived until returning to their home in Montana in 1994.

Sydney is preceded in death by her grandparents, Ella and Orville Schwindt, Bertha and Joseph Muir; her parents; brother, Robert Joseph Muir; niece, Sheryle Alice Muir; and two cousins.

She is survived in death by her beloved husband Jack Furst; daughters, Carol D. Muir, Kathryn L. Furst; son, David M. Furst; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three nieces, and nine cousins.
