Mrs. Suzanne Maria Callaway Shaw, 81, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2015, at Legacy Court at Wellspring of Evergreen in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a long illness. She was surrounded by family. Born in Penfield, Georgia, October 5, 1934, to the late Rev. Webster Ragan Callaway and Mrs. Estelle Callaway, she spent virtually the entirety of her childhood in Cumming, Georgia.
Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Kenneth B. Shaw, who was pastor of Unity Baptist Church in Newnan, Georgia, from 1959-1976, and by her brother, William N. ” Billy ” Callaway, of Cumming, Georgia. At Unity Baptist, “Miss Suzanne” was involved in numerous aspects of its ministry and teaching, having a special place in her heart for the church’s youth group. She encouraged the development of both the Christmas and Easter outdoor dramas presented by the church. And, in 1973, she was influential in the creation, institution and development of the Unity Mission Trips, an effort of the church that continues today.
Mrs. Shaw was a creative, hands on educator who earned degrees from Truett-McConnell College, Mercer University, and The University of West Georgia. She served a total of 40 years in elementary schools in Fulton County (Cedar Grove), and in Coweta County, Georgia. As a teacher, her greatest passion was helping her students develop their intellectual curiosity, and encouraging respect for the Earth. Her many travels abroad reflected her concern for the environment and her commitment to demonstrate and advocate for diversity, tolerance and peace in her daily life. Mrs. Shaw was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She inspired her family with a simple admonition to “Go, do, be!”, and to do so with a zeal for the unique, a caring heart for the planet, and an abiding faith in God.
Suzanne Shaw is survived by her children, Mr. Kenneth Shaw, Jr. (Robert) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Amelia Whitlock (Edward) of Newnan, Georgia, Mr. Timothy Shaw (Lee), of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Dr. Kyle Shaw (Angelique) of Leesburg, Florida. Also surviving are her grandchildren Allen Whitlock, Ragan Whitlock, Callie Shaw, Anna Shaw, Daniel Shaw, Nathan Shaw, Emily Shaw and Kellen Shaw; and her cherished brother, Dr. Webster Ragan Callaway, Jr, and beloved sister, Mrs. Janice Callaway Wallis, of Rudyard, Michigan.
