Susan “Su” Hindle George, almost 93, passed away peacefully in Okeechobee, Florida on April 9, 2021. Su will be dearly missed as a mother, in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.
Su was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 12, 1928, and spent her formative years in Milford, Connecticut. She excelled in academics and gained early admission to the University of Chicago where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at age 19. Su continued to hone her intellect and remained curious and well-read throughout her life.
While in Chicago Su met and married Fred, the love of her life and husband of 55 years. Su and Fred moved to Hollywood, Florida in 1955 where they were blessed with a daughter, and later moved to Haverhill (West Palm Beach) in 1963 where they were blessed with a son. After raising a family and partnering in small business endeavors for many years, Su and Fred moved to Okeechobee in 1998 to be closer to the pleasures of their wonderful grandsons.
Su cherished and sought the company of others and was happiest in the care and service of her family and friends, her church, and her local community. She had the wonderful ability to live life at the moment and rarely dwelled on worry or regret. She was optimistic and determined and made the best of any situation with a sense of humor always intact. These traits were exemplified, when at an advanced age, Su tirelessly and patiently provided compassionate care to her beloved husband during his years-long dementia-induced decline.
Su was always an active and dedicated woman of faith. She served most of her life in the Christian Church Disciples of Christ, in the Christian Women’s Fellowship, in the Emmaus, Chrysalis, and Kairos ministries, and later carried her faithful service to Okeechobee Presbyterian Church. She held numerous positions and roles within these communities and strove to set an example that could inspire others to see the virtues of her faith.
Su’s enthusiasm to serve extended to secular life. Shortly after her arrival in Florida and while raising her young daughter, Su was active in the Woman’s Club of Hollywood, Florida. Not surprisingly, Su was drawn to the service-centric ethos of Rotary International where she and her husband served in a variety of roles for over 25 years and where she was proud to be designated an Honorary Rotarian by the Rotary Club of Okeechobee. Su was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in her later years and was an active volunteer in the Okeechobee Historical Society and in the Okeechobee Public Schools.
Although a self-described “half-Yankee” and a “short-timer” by local standards, Su loved the people and the spirit of Okeechobee and its environs. After noticing a neglected roadside historical marker, Su initiated, advocated, and participated in numerous activities over several years to enhance and raise awareness of the Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State Park. Like many times before, in this, her last big endeavor, she made many new friends and found herself losing herself in the service of others.
Su is survived by the following members of her immediate family: daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Mark Hart of San Jose California; son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Patty George of Okeechobee, Florida; grandson, Kyle George of Okeechobee, Florida; grandson, Corey White of Salt Lake City, Utah; and by grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Hank and Ashley Schultz and their three children, Tre, Jaxson, and Carli, all of West Palm Beach, Florida.
