Susan was born August 30, 1928, to Dr. Benjamin Bibb Mattox and Florence Settle Mattox in Elberton, Georgia. She graduated from Elbert County High School, attended Wesleyan College in Macon, and graduated from The University of Georgia in Athens with a BA in Sociology.
