Susan Mary Sargeant, 76, of Knoxville, died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Roper St. Francis in Summerville, SC.

Sue was born in Chicago, Il. on March 10, 1945, to Albert and Josephine Mesko. She was predeceased by her parents and beloved brother, Edward Mesko.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, William W. Sargeant, of Knoxville; and daughters Tracy Burlison and her husband, Steve of Summerville, SC; and Lisa Myers and her husband, Andrew, of Rio Rico, Arizona.William and Susan began dating in college and were married on August 5, 1967. They were first set up on a blind date, which was literal for Sue, as she had lost a contact lens that day. They’ve been together ever since.

Sue graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island in 1967 with a degree in Biochemistry. They settled in Galesburg to start a family and later moved to Knoxville. Sue worked many years for the State of Illinois research lab in Galesburg; Puritan Churchill Chemical in Galesburg; and the Galesburg Animal Disease Lab.In the summer, you could often find her in a big floppy hat and garden gloves working in her vegetable and herb garden as well as tending to the numerous flower beds around the house.

She could tell you all the scientific and common names for every plant. She also had an eye for arranging flowers and always had a fresh bouquet to brighten up the house. She was an amazing cook and baker, often turning the bounty from her garden into dishes she enjoyed sharing with neighbors and her potluck pool group. She was also talented in sewing, crafting many Christmas ornaments and stockings, doll clothing, outfits as well as altering the odd sports uniform or band flag with ease.Sue was an avid reader, often devouring several books at one.

She enjoyed all genres from history to fiction and will be missed at her monthly book club meetings and by her bridge card group. Dad often said that he’d love to get her on ‘Jeopardy!’, that she could have beaten some of the champions without even trying. It was one of the shows they enjoyed watching together as they often retired in the evenings to binge watch Netflix.
