Susan Jane Wessling, affectionately “Sue J,” died Saturday evening, October 17, 2020, with her loving husband of 57 years holding her hand. Sue J, her husband, and children, spent the day at their beautiful farm nestled in the hills of Northern Alabama.  She loved God, her husband, children, grandchildren, horses, and her many students whom she mentored at Silver Stirrup Stables, a training academy she founded at 55 years old.

Before she died, her husband built a bonfire on the farm and they watched it together. In the sunshine, her children gathered around her to pray.  Throughout the week prior to her passing, her eldest daughter Laura kept telling Sue J everyone would be there Saturday. Sue J stayed with us until then.

Sue J was a gentle and perseverant fighter and didn’t complain. She survived polio as a teenager, breast cancer in her 50’s, and raised a large family. The kindness of a thousand affirmations she could give in one glance, and even during years struggling with dementia, she would sing “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart… peace that passes understanding down in my heart to stay.”

As the sun was setting on Saturday, during the online Vigil Mass, she passed from this world to the next to meet her Savior, Jesus Christ.  She is survived by her devoted husband, Francis, her five children, Laura (& Ron) Phillips, Frank (& Kathryn) Wessling, Paul (& Heather) Wessling, Angela (& Chris) Mattern, and Stephen (& Christy) Wessling as well as her many grandchildren.  We look forward to seeing Sue J again in the next life with God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
