Susan E. Counts, 93, of Temple, formerly of Harker Heights., died Monday, January 7, 2013, in a Temple Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Counts was born December 29, 1919 in Germantown, Kentucky the third child of Emmitt and Clara (Disher) Hinson. Mrs. Counts married J. T. Counts in 1949, as a military wife spent 3 tours in Germany before they settled in Harker Heights in 1960. JT their son was born in 1955 at Ft. Riley Kansas. Mrs. Counts and her husband founded Double J. Mobile Home Park in Harker Heights in the late 1960s. She retired in 1987 from Civil Service at Ft. Hood after 29 years as an employee.
She was the chief telephone operator and retired as Director of Information. She worked for KISD from 1988 to 2009. She also worked as a cashier at Jason’s Deli in Killeen from 2000 to 2011. Mrs. Counts was ordained as minister in 1985 with the Independent Assemblies of God Intersestrial and served as pianist, organist, Sunday school teacher and as pastor for two years at Temple Full Gospel Tabernacle in Temple.
She was preceded in death by her husband J. T. (Jim Counts), two brothers Clinton and Raymond Hinson and one sister Evelyn Bennett and parents. Survivors include one son J. T. Counts, Jr. of Temple and his wife Janet. Three granddaughters Jena Marie Counts of Temple. Stacy Ferree and husband Johnny of El Paso and Mandy Sherman and husband Avion of Ft. Hood. As well as six great grandsons and two great granddaughters.
