Sumner “Sub” William Hurlburt, Sr., 75, of Middletown, passed away on Wednesday, August 25th at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Arthur and Kathryn (Royce) Hurlburt. Sub lived in Westbrook and Middletown for the majority of his life. He served as a volunteer fireman at the South District Fire Department for two decades, was a former member of the Middletown Sportsman Club and a thirty year member of Operating Engineers Union Local 478. After retirement, he became licensed as a commercial lobsterman enjoying the crustations of Long Island Sound, he also bought a Harley and enjoyed riding and was an avid sportsman traveling as far as Africa to hunt exotic animals. Sub is survived by his son, Sumner “Sandy” W. Hurlburt, Jr. and Tammy of Gansvort, NY; his daughter, Avis Devine and her husband, John of Middletown; two brothers, Charles Hurlburt of Old Saybrook and Fred Hurlburt of Deltona, FL; two sisters, Sharon Bell of Cromwell and Kay-Ellen Hart of Middletown; two grandchildren, Jacob Hurlburt and Elaine Devine; one great grandchild, Matthew Devine; several nieces and nephews, and his special companion, his cat. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Floyd “Ray” Hurlburt.
