On April 24,1929, in Okemah, Oklahoma, Stewart O. Nero and Ethel Hawkins Nero welcomed their first-born son, Stewart Adell Nero into their family. Stewart was raised with two brothers, Thomas and Reevis and three sisters Anita, Kate, and Zella.
The Nero family found ways to make a life in the small town of Okemah where the children received their primary education. However, there were few opportunities for young African Americans in the south in the 1940’s. Stewart joined the United States Army in 1948. He received his basic training in Houston, Texas. He trained as a Medic and served in Viet Nam and Japan along with other assignments in the states. Stewart retired from the United States Army 1972 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
