Steven W. Ochs, 51, perhaps better known as “”The Major””, died at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital Chicago on the evening of Thursday, November 18 after an illness. Steve was born on June 26, 1959 in Goshen, IN, a son of Robert and Delores Ochs and graduated from Concord High School Goshen, IN in 1977.
Even before his graduation Steve enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and spent 23 years as an active duty service member, guarding embassies around the world and seeing combat in the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, The Gulf War, and Somalia. After retiring as a highly decorated officer, Steve moved to Huntington in 1999, the hometown of his wife, Beth McCallister, and lived there for the rest of his life where he chose jobs he enjoyed, including substitute teaching, managing Markle Pool, and most recently running for sheriff.
Steve Ochs believed in giving back to his country, his community, and the people he knew. He never hesitated to listen and give advice and is held in a special esteem by the young people of Huntington County. His policy was to treat everyone he met with respect and had a great fondness for hearing of any positive event in the lives of one of his students or friends.
He is survived by his wife Beth and three sons Nick, Riley, and Ross Ochs all of Huntington, IN. His father Robert Ochs, Goshen, IN and a brother Paul and his wife Julie Ochs, Goshen, IN also one niece Emily Ochs and a nephew Ryan Ochs. A lifelong athlete, world traveler, and warrior, Steve Ochs lived life well and never grew tired of it. He was not known to back down from any fight worth fighting and left this world far too early. Though Steve excelled at every endeavor in his life, his finest accomplishment was being a great husband and father. Steve loved nothing more than his family.
