He was born May 9, 1941, in Greenwood, Miss., to Steve L. Sr. and Ida (Williams) Johnson. On Nov. 6, 1988, he married Mamie L. Higgins in Rochester.
She survives along with five sons, Clyde Livine of Indianapolis, Alquirey Johnson of Baltimore, Rudy Greer of Elkhart, Shawndre Johnson of South Bend and Steve L. “Stevie” Johnson III of Lansing, Mich.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Johnson of Elkhart and Ben (Tammy) Johnson of Richmond, Va.; and two sisters, Daisy Harris and Mary Agnew, both of Elkhart.
One son, Anthony “Pookie” Greer; one brother, Flauzell Johnson; and two sisters, Lavanda Morton and Joyce Johnson, preceded him in death.
Mr. Johnson was a truck driver most of his life, working nearly 20 years at Rieth-Riley Construction, Goshen, more than 10 years at Warner and Son Construction, Elkhart, and RTS Trucking of Elkhart, where he was employed at the time of his death.
He was adept in mechanics, and working on trucks in his youth led him to a career in truck driving. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, holding backyard barbecues for his family and friends, and watching comedies and old westerns starring John Wayne. He had attended St. James AME Church.
