Steve was born on November 16, 1929, in Douglas, Arizona. to George Monroe and Margaret Kathleen Dunagan. Steve grew up on the “Needmore” Ranch in the bootheel of New Mexico, in the Animas Valley. He enlisted in the United States Army, and found himself stationed at Ft. Tilden in New York. It was there that Steve met the love of his life, Theresa Lorenzo. After a brief courtship they were married on September 13, 1952. Shortly after his discharge from the Army they moved to Animas in New Mexico.
Steve worked various jobs, from the NM State Highway Department, to the Natural Gas Company and later the New Mexico State Police. In 1956 Steve and Jenny, with three youngsters in tow, moved to Douglas, Arizona where Steve took a job with the Douglas, Unified School District.
Steve was a talented Craftsman as well as an accomplished Electrician. He was a “Jack of all Trades” Lovingly known as “MacGyver” by his family. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build, fix or recreate. He loved to tinker, but his favorite past time was music. He could play a mean guitar, but his passion was the fiddle. He taught his wife and children to appreciate and play music as well, forming a family band, “The Rhythm Ramblers.” They enjoyed many wonderful years together.
With the family grown, with children of their own, Steve retired after 30 years as the maintenance Supervisor for the DUSD in 1997. He and Terry sold their Douglas home and moved to Hereford, AZ where they spent the last 17 years.
Steve was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 60 years in 2011, his parents and three brothers.
He is survived by two sisters; Margarite of Tucson, AZ. Mary Waller of Silver City, NM and one brother, Paul (Pam) of Lordsburg, NM. Two sons; Alexander (Dale) of Douglas, AZ., Frank (Christine) of Apache Junction, AZ One daughter, Kathy Mayer (Jerry) of Silver City, NM.
He also leaves numerous, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His presence will be forever felt in our hearts.
