Stephen Douglas Thomas, 63, of Great Falls, passed away from an undisclosed cause, Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at a local healthcare facility.
Stephen was born September 23, 1949 to Norm and Midge Thomas of Dayton, Ohio. In his youth, he excelled in sports. He was an excellent gymnast and diver. In 1969, he answered Uncle Sam’s call by serving a year in Vietnam. He was stationed at Pleiku Air Base. Stephen continued his military career as a mechanic for 20 more years and retired January 1, 1991. He was stationed in Oklahoma, Montana twice, England and South Korea. While he was stationed in England, he met his wife, who was also in the military. One of his proudest achievements was his receiving the Commandants Award at the NCO Academy. After working several jobs he finally became employee with FedEx, retiring in 2004.
Stephen was a very skilled craftsman. He made numerous wooden items including his son’s crib, bed, dining room furniture and other furniture. He made several items for his home. When other’s requested some of his work he made retirement boxes and gun cabinets. The item he was proudest of was a solid oak fly-tying bench. He also made beautiful stained glass items, like terrariums.
He loved the outdoors. He and his buddies would go on fishing trips. He was an avid fly-fisherman. He took his family camping all over the state. He and his family went on numerous hikes, like Mt. Wright and Holland Lake Falls. Another thing he enjoyed was geocaching with his best buddy, Trixie.
Stephen is survived by his wife Tina of Great Falls; his son Brad; and his two sisters Janet (Pete) Mitri and Jeanne (Chuck) Geraci.
