The sun rose on the life of Stephen Elnathan Sherman, (known to most as Steve), on Monday, January 10, 1921, at 7:30 p.m., in Akron, Colorado, when he was born to John Sherman and Lillie Baldwin – Sherman. The fifth son of twelve children, he had 9 brothers: Cleon, Robert, James, George, Eugene, Charles, Edward and John Jr., and 3 sisters: Lillie, Carrie and Laura. As a child, Stephen, enjoyed school, sports and learning everything he could from his older siblings. Whenever a new sibling was born, Stephen was chosen to stay out of school for two weeks and help his Mother with the household chores, which included cooking, something he continued to enjoy doing even as an adult. Stephen was educated in the public school system, graduating from Akron High School, Class of 1939. He was very active in High school playing football, basketball participating in the school band and orchestra. He has also a part of the High School Yearbook Staff and in the Boys Glee Club. Stephen enlisted in the United States Army in October of 1942.
