DOORN, Stella L., Of Kalamazoo. Age 90 Stella went to be with her Lord on Wednesday evening, Feb.16, surrounded by her family. She has finally heard Jesus’ words, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Stella Adams Doorn was born to Simon and Lina Adams on Jan.19, 1921, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She had three brothers and five sisters all deceased – Koert, Lawrence, Bert, Alice, Nell, Ann, Mary and Jane.

Stella went to State High School and Mahrs Business School. She spent much of her time ice skating, roller skating, and being active in 4-H. She later was a 4-H leader. She worked at Woolworth’s, Clarage Fan, Lincoln Life Insurance, and later worked at Schaap’s Greenhouse for 20 years. Stella met Jerry while ice skating in 1941 and they were married on Sept.28, 1945. They were married for 57 years before Jerry preceded her in death on Oct.29, 2002. They have two daughters, Marcia Norm Sipsma of Kalamazoo and Gloria Rob Kelly of Pine Lake. They have three grandchildren, Amy Andy Surrette of Raleigh, North Carolina, Karen Kevin Martin of Kalamazoo, and Jim Kelly fiance’ Kim VanHoose of Battle Creek.

They have seven great grandchildren, Kayla, Drew and Ashlynn Surrette, Abby, Nick, Kenzie, and Taylor Martin. Jerry and Stella enjoyed many vacations at Indian Lake in the Upper Peninsula water skiing, golfing and fishing. Stella was a very accomplished poet and also a practical joker. Her dry sense of humor was always appreciated by her family and given the name “Aunt Stella jokes”.

She had a musical ear and enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Her ability to play any hymn by ear was special. She and her family would sing around the piano every Sunday night before church. Stella was raised in Twin Lakes Reformed Church and after their marriage, was a member of Comstock Christian Reformed Church. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Director’s Hall for their wonderful care for Stella.
