Stefanie Michelle Scruggs Rice was born January 11, 1970 to Mr. James Willie Scruggs and Mrs. June Moore Scruggs in Decatur, Alabama.
As a youth, Stefanie accepted the Lord as her Savior then joined Mt Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America. She immediately became an active member participating in various youth activities, (Choir #3, and the Cumberland Presbyterian Youth Fellowship (CPYF); and continued through adulthood. She faithfully served as a member of the Christian Education Committee, Youth Advisor, Vacation Bible School Coordinator, Kitchen Committee #3, and The Friends and Family Day Committee. She accepted the Great Commission in the literal and gave her best to always adhere to the call.
Stefanie was a 1989 graduate of Decatur High School in Decatur, Alabama. She furthered her education at Calhoun Community College. Her career aspirations were multi-faceted. Initially, she worked for Winn Dixie as a cashier. Realizing her potential was much greater, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama to work as an Operations Manager for Kelleymire. Later, she was compelled to move back to her hometown of Decatur, Alabama where worked for Price Busters as an Office Manager. Stefanie’s accomplishments were due to her strong desire to serve people.
Her mission field was totally centered on working for the Lord. Her love for Him gave her an unwavering zeal to press for the prize of the high calling of Christ Jesus. She often spoke as Isaiah, “Here I am Lord, send me!” Her dedication was such that nothing or no one could stop her mission of servant hood even when her health began to fail, she never stopped helping others.
Her family will miss her skills of networking and coordinating family events. She spent countless hours calling and keeping tabs on everyone and always would affectionately say, “I am just checking on my folks” and after an update she would end by saying “love y’all and I’ll see you later.
Finally, the one person that she devoted as much love and energy to as she did to the work of the Lord was her only child, Tyronica McAdory. Stefanie was determined to rear “Tyra”, as she affectionately called her in the “nurture and the admonition of the Lord”. This desire to “bring up a child in the way that she should go…” led Stefanie to shuttle Tyra, to Sunday School, Bible Study, Praise Team practice and performances, choir practice, and almost any activities in and concerning the church. Stefanie did this many times when she did not feel well, and when she was physically unable to transport Tyra herself, she would enlist others she trusted to safely transport Tyra for her.
Her most precious memory will be treasured by her daughter, Tyronica; her beloved mother, who she referred to as “Mama June”, Mrs. June Moore Scruggs and her father, Mr. James Willie Scruggs (both of Decatur); her sister, Ms. Allison Moore Bolden (Decatur); her great-aunts: Mrs. Johnnie Collier Grigsby (Madison), Mrs. Mary L. Chatman (Decatur), and Mrs. Fannie Moore Matthews (Athens); her aunts: Ms. Joyce M. White (Decatur), Mrs. Jacqueline Moore McGlathery (Huntsville), Mrs. Alfreda Moore Malone (Athens), Mrs. Victoria Moore Santiago (St. Petersburg, FL), Mrs. Chicquita Moore Perry (Birmingham); her uncles, Mr. Billy G. Moore, Rev. John A. Moore, and Mr. Charles D. Moore (all of Decatur), and Rev Kim D. Moore (Torreon, Coahuila Mexico); husband, Hurley Rice, as well as nieces, nephews, and loving cousins.
