Stanley W. Mastey, of Schererville, Indiana, died August 31, 2017.  He was 95. A graduate of Catholic Central High School (now Bishop Noll), Bryant and Stratton Business College, the University of South Carolina, and Northwestern University and Indiana University (post graduate), he was employed by the accounting firm of Newberg, Mazur and Ahlf, and later the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. During World War II, Mr. Mastey served in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Duluth.

He was also a staff officer for the commander of battleships and cruisers in the Pacific on the U.S.S. St. Paul. Following his four years of military service, Mr. Mastey was a field representative for 30 years with the Social Security Administration office in Hammond, Indiana. He enjoyed making presentations to union steel workers, schools, and fraternal organizations and answering listener questions on weekly radio broadcasts at WJOB in Hammond with host Larry Peterson.

A member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Schererville since 1954, he was one of the founders of what was then known as the Christian Family Movement. He was a lector for more than 20 years at St. Michael’s, a member of the Holy Name Society (served as secretary), and a member of the Parish Board and Building Committee. Mr. Mastey was secretary of the Schererville (Baseball) Town League, a manager of the Yankees Little League Baseball team, and managed Schererville’s All Star team that was the only team to ever beat the Brunswick (Gary) All Star team. Mr. Mastey was also active civically, serving as treasurer of Schererville’s Centennial Celebration in 1966, a past director of the Schererville Civic Fund, and a member of the Lake County Council on Aging.

His greatest pride was his truly loving wife, Jean, to whom he was married for 67 years, who did so much in their marriage to raise their children whom he loved so much. He is survived by Jean and their six sons and daughters – Jerry (Maryan) Mastey, Nancy Larson, Carole (Dr. Terry) Bushnell, Paul (Lynn) Mastey, Dr. Joseph (Karyn) Mastey and Laura (Michael) Jonas – 17 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The 17 grandchildren include: Christopher Mastey, Brian (Molly) Mastey, Mike (Katie) Larson, Jennifer (Adam) Minniear, Aaron (Erica) Bushnell, Jordan (Heidi) Bushnell, Daniel (Emily) Bushnell, Patrick (Abby) Bushnell, Justin Bushnell, Lindsey Mastey, Ross Mastey, Dr. Kevin (Jaimie) Mastey, Sarah (Rory) Groessl, Kelly Mastey, Sarah Jonas, and Hannah Jonas.  Another grandchild, Alex Mastey, preceded Stanley Mastey in death. Although they were not members of his family, Mr. Mastey’s caregivers Patti, Alyssa, Ariel and Pat seemed to become members of the family as they consistently provided outstanding care with much-needed physical support, emotional comfort and spiritual encouragement as did hospice care workers during the final weeks of his life Mr. Mastey was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Mastey; sisters Helen, Stella Richwalski, Frances Janicki; and two brothers, Rev. Walter Mastey and Frank Mastey.
