Stanley Joseph Whelan, 92, of Ellicott City and a former 22-year resident of Brooklyn Park, died of natural causes August 8 at Encore at Turf Valley Skilled Nursing Facility in Ellicott City.
Born August 25, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA, he lived in Long Island, NY from infancy to age 15. The family moved to the Baltimore area in 1942. He graduated from Baltimore City College at age 16. During the final years of WWII, he served in the U.S. Maritime Service transporting troops and supplies. He graduated from the Johns Hopkins University McCoy College in 1963 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He began his career at Glenn L. Martin Company, later Martin Marietta, and worked there for 19 years. In 1963 he continued his career at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Aerospace Division in Linthicum and retired in 1997 from Northrop Grumman.
The focus of his life was his faith in God. He was a loving, devoted husband and father and a friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Lois Whelan; his son, Stanley Joseph Whelan, Jr.; his father, Joseph Bussey Whelan and mother, Ethel Field Whelan; his brother, George Harris Whelan and sister-in-law, Addie Forsyth Whelan.
He is survived by his son, Nelson and wife Heather of Abingdon; daughter, Deborah of Ellicott City; many nieces and nephews, as well as special cousins, including Virgil and Lillian Field Klaty, of Fredericksburg, VA, Linda Johnson Hockaday of Spotsylvania, VA, Ruby Whelan of St. John’s, NL, Canada, Dave Whalen of Richmond, VA, Bob and Linda Whalen Woodman of NL, Canada, Graham Whalen of SK, Canada, and Ken and Diane Whalen of NL, Canada.
The Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department, 4150 Montgomery Road, Ellicott City, MD 21042, provided wonderful, caring assistance to Stanley during his last year at his home.
