Stanley I. Guilkey, 63, died Monday August 8, 2011 at St. Johns Hospital, Anderson after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Anderson July 9, 1948 he was the son of the late Earl and RoVerda (Lucas) Guilkey. Raised in Alexandria, IN he was a 1966 graduate of Alexandria High School. Stan was a dynamic and highly motivated individual. He made things happen and was always willing to give his time and talents toward a worthy cause. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Stan attended Ball State University and received an Associates Degree from Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Indianapolis. After mortuary school, he moved to Los Angeles, CAwhere he worked atGates, Kingsley and Gates Funeral Home. He moved to Anderson in 1973 and purchased the Sells and Rowe Funeral Home, now Guilkey Funeral Home in the Historical District of Anderson. He was a founder and owner of Aid Ambulance. He received many prestigious community awards for his accomplishments.Stan made Anderson a better place to live by volunteering many his hours and resources to the community.
Stan was very involved with the Anderson Historical Preservation Commission since 1976, serving as President and Vice President. He contributed to setting many of the guidelines for the commission. As well, Stan served on the Board of Directors of the Historic West 8th Street Neighborhood Association. During this time he helped organize and run the Historic Gaslight Festival.Stan served on St. Johns Health Systems Development Board and as a volunteer at the first Pain Webber Wine Tasting Event.Other organizations/boards in which Stan was involved include the Anderson Fine Arts Center Board of Directors, Board of the YMCA, Rural Urban Design Assistance Team, The White River Development Commission, the Mayors Arts and Cultural Commission, the 20/20 Foresight Project, and the Site Building Management Committee for Robinson School, Editorial Board of the Herald-Bulletin, where he was a guest Editor. He was a former District Precinct Committeeman for the Republican Party. He was a member of the Anderson Rotary Club. Stan was awarded The Elmo Funk Ideal of Service Award in 2010. He was proud to say he had lived in the Historical District for the past 30 years.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, Daughters; Shelley (John Patrick) Cade, Julie (Seth) Johnson, Heather (Jeff) Williams, Heidi Guilkey, Son; Jeff Guilkey. Granddaughters; Jamie (Chad) Ayinde, Lauryn Patrick, and Amie Johnson. Brothers; Steve (Bev) Guilkey, Dan (Donna) Guilkey, Scott (Lori) Guilkey. Sister; Lisa (Todd) Graham. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins, many good friends especially Jim Freeman and Mike and Marsha Phillips.
