Stanley D. Bartkevicius—beloved father, friend, free spirit, veteran, swimmer, and horseman—died at the age of 93 on November 23, 2020 after a long illness. He was born on July 18, 1927 in Gelvonai, Lithuania to Stanley and Helen Bartkevicius, and immigrated to Milford, CT with his family at the age of three.
Stanley Bartkevicius spent the rest of his career as a supervisor and inspector in aircraft engine plants. His marriage to Sheila Copeland (the late Sheila Copeland Stella), ended in divorce, but they remained close friends until her death in 2001. Also preceding him in death are his parents, his brother (Albin Bartkevicius), his sister (Victoria Bartkevicius Johnson), and his companion (Nan Stubbs). He is survived by his daughter, Jocelyn Bartkevicius, son-in-law Pete Ives of Winter Park, FL, four grandchildren, nearly a dozen grandchildren, nieces and nephews, the Copeland family, and the children and grandchildren of Nan, who affectionately referred to him as “Bumpy.”
He was an avid open-water swimmer in Long Island Sound along his beloved coast of Milford. In 1966 he bought a hundred acres in Woodbury, CT and stocked it with semi-wild horses. There, he and his daughter spent some of the most exhilarating weekends of their lives riding through the woods and even into town for ice cream and a swim (horses and humans) in the river. In retirement, he became a “snow bird,” splitting his time between homes in Southbury, CT, and Suntree in Melbourne, FL, where he rang in many new year’s eves with a devoted group of friends.
