Sister Edith (Edith Teresa) Stricker, age 98, died January 31, 2017 at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland. She was born on April 19, 1918 in Baltimore, Maryland. Sister Edith was the fourth of eight children born to Charles and Isabel (Mason) Stricker.
Sister Edith joined the Daughters of Charity on September 7, 1936 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Her first mission was at Our Lady of Victory School in Portsmouth, Virginia where she served as a teacher from 1937-1944. Several other teaching assignments followed: St. Mary School, Troy, New York (1944-1945); St. Vincent Home, Saginaw, Michigan (1945-1952); St. Ann School, Bridgeport, Connecticut (1952-1958); St. James School, Johnson City, New York (1958-1960); Our Lady of Lourdes School, Utica, New York (1960-1967); and St. Catherine Labouré School, Wheaton, Maryland (1967-1977). Sister Edith then used her teaching skills as a Director of Religious Education and Parish Minister St. Patrick Parish, Fayetteville, North Carolina where she ministered from 1977-1982. From 1982-1991 she served at Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Gloverville, South Carolina as Director of Religious Education. In 1991 she returned to St. Catherine Labouré Parish in Wheaton and was a Parish Minister until 2004 when she retired to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. At Villa St. Michael she served in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.
Sister Edith earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg in 1960.
Sister Edith was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings. She is survived by a sister, Marie Paiva of Rhode Island, nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in Community.
