Sims D, Bowers, 94, passed away on February 3, 2018, at Rust Medical Center in Rio Rancho NM. He was born on October 27, 1923, in Greer South Carolina to Charles and Viola (Pitts) Bowers.
Sims grew up in Laurens South Carolina. He graduated from Ford High school in Laurens South Carolina in 1939. After high school, he: worked for The Civilian Conservation Corps where he was a machinist assistant. joined the US Marine Corps in 1943 and served for three years. He served in WWII in the South and Central Pacific areas where he participated in action against enemy forces at Eniwetak Island, Eniwetak Atoll, and the Marshall Islands He was Honorably Discharged in 1945, achieving the rank of Private First Class.
began work in the textile industry as a loom fitter where he worked for several years.
Joined the US Border Patrol in 1958 and moved to Lordsburg New Mexico in 1965 and retired in 1978.
Served with the Hidalgo County Sheriff Department as the Undersheriff in 1991 and 1992.
Sims married Cora Johnson in 1947 in Laurens South Carolina. They were happily married for 70 years. Sims was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner.
Sims was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Viola, brothers Charles (CD), Don, Dan, and sister Dorothy (DOT).
Sims is survived by his spouse Cora of Lordsburg New Mexico; his sons Doug, (Irma) Bowers of Rio Rancho New Mexico; Mike, (Lisa) Bowers of Forest Chapel Texas; Clint Bowers of Lordsburg New Mexico; his grandchildren Jason, Aaron, Kristen, Amy Sue, Amy Lee, Amanda, Eric, Jon, Koby, Shelby, Kelsey; His great-grandchildren Victoria, Bryce, Carmen, Tyler, Trevor, Emerie Nolan, Julee, Holly, Colton, Jon Jr, Adrienne, Alexis ; and his nieces and nephews and other relatives.
