Simone (Verhaghen) Howland, formerly of Hobart Street, Danvers and Brooksby Village, Peabody, died on December 28, 2019 after a lengthy illness. She was 94 years old. She was the wife of the late Edward B. Howland and is survived by her daughter Micheline and her husband Steven Ryan of Salem, MA and her son Glenn and his wife Martha of Northfield, VT. She is also survived by two grandsons, Connor Ryan and his wife Nicole of Salem, MA and Liam Ryan of San Diego, CA and two great grandchildren, Maeve and Finn Ryan of Salem, MA. Born in Brussels, Belgium on March 15, 1925, Mrs. Howland studied to become a teacher before she met US Army private Edward B. Howland, who would become her husband of 60 years until his death in 2005. As a war bride, Mrs. Howland left Brussels aboard a US Liberty ship, arriving in New York City on March 15, 1946. Years later, she studied at North Shore Community College and subsequently became a teacher’s aide in the language department at Danvers High School, where she helped students for more than 20 years. She and her husband also hosted many foreign exchange students over the years until she moved to Brooksby Village in 2006. Mrs. Howland loved animals, especially cats, and the music of the forties and fifties. She is most remembered for the loving care she provided to her family, especially to her husband during his long term illness.
