Silas S. Hofmann, Jr. of Chariton, IA died Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center at 84 years of age. Si was born August 17, 1930 near Morton, IL to Silas S. and Hannah B. Hofmann, Sr. He grew up in the New Castle area, graduating from Deer Creek High School in 1948.
On September 2, 1951 Si was united in marriage to Thelma Mae Knecht in Eureka, IL. To this union nine children were born.
For the first ten years of their marriage, Si drove a truck for Ed Pyles and Chipper Cartage. In 1962 he began his farming career near Gridley, IL.
In 1964 at 34 years of age, Si bought his first farm, moving his wife and growing family from Gridley to Humeston, IA. His farming operation included livestock, dairy, and crops. In 1998 Si sold the buildings with a portion of the farm and moved to Chariton, IA, continuing to work the family farm for the next decade. The year of his death marked a half-century in Iowa.
Si took a particular interest in his friends, family genealogy, old-time country music, and antique trucks.
Preceding Si in death were his parents, infant son, Michael David in 1957, son, Daniel Keith in 2000, and sister-in-law Janet Knecht in February 2014.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Thelma, of Chariton; 7 children: Steve (Nancy) – Lamoni; Carl – Kellerton; Christine – Chariton; Fred (Sheila) – Blue Rapids, KS; Kathleen (Dennis McIntire) – Lamoni, Ron (Micki) – Humeston; John (Cindi) – Humeston; 15 Grandchildren; 8 Great-Grandchildren; and sister, Lorraine (Herbert Weier) – Ft. Wayne, IN.
