Sidney Dean Shanks was born in Osceola, Iowa on December 28, 1957 to Charles Edwin and Marjoria Ann Shanks.
He passed away March 23, 2010 at the Lucas County Health Center at the age of 52.
Sid spent his entire life in Lucas County.
He graduated from Chariton High School in the Class of 77.
He married his high school sweetheart, Laurie Costolo in 1978.
Together they had 3 children – Travis Dean, April Lynn and Casey Lee.
Sid had various jobs throughout his life, but the one that he was the most passionate about is the job of being a farmer.
In 2005, Sid and his cousin Jim Shanks bought his parents farm north of Chariton.
His main focus was on his cattle.
It was his job and one of his favorite hobbies.
Sid and Laurie also enjoyed traveling with friends and made many fun memories that will always be cherished.
He absolutely adored his three grandkids – Dalton Dean, 4
– Lola Lynn, 2 and Klaire Nikole, 1.
They adored him also and called him – G-Pa.
Sid was preceded in death by his father, Ed, his grandparents, Ralph and Opal Shanks and grandfather, Don Horton and brother-in-law Harry Schilling.
Sid is survived by his wife of 31 years, Laurie; sons: Travis (Kassy) of Mingo, Casey (Tracy) of Grimes and daughter April Shriver (Cameron) of Norman, Oklahoma; grandchildren: Dalton and Klaire Shanks and Lola Shriver; mother Annie Shanks of Chariton; grandmother Dorotha Horton of Osceola; sisters Debbie Shanks, Shelly (Marty) Schilling, Becca (John) Bittner all of Chariton; father and mother-in-law Denny and Judy Wetzel of Ames and brothers and sisters-in-laws: Kim Ruepke, Dave Wetzel, Dawn Cole, Dusty Wetzel and Devin Wetzel, several nieces and nephews and lots of relatives and very special friends.
Family met with friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2010.
