Shirley Thomas Bowling, 61, of Anderson, died unexpectedly on August 2, 2013, at his residence. He was born April 24, 1952, in Lexington, Kentucky, the eldest son of Shirley and Viola Martin Bowling. Tom was a 1970 graduate of Anderson High School and received an Associate’s Degree from Vincennes University. He retired in 1999 from the Indiana Army National Guard with the rank of Master Sergeant after 28 years of service.
At retirement he was the Information Systems Chief for Headquarters Company of the 138th Signal Battalion in Anderson. His awards include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon and M16 Rifle Sharpshooter Qualification Badge. He was very proud of his service to his country and especially the security detail his unit provided at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a former member of the American Legion Post 408 in Chesterfield and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Madison County. After retirement, he owned and operated two car lots and a construction company. He was a master carpenter and could repair and build anything. He remodeled dozens of homes in the Anderson area.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Janis Perdiew Bowling; daughter, Angella R. Bowling of Anderson; son, Matthew Thomas fiancee, Rachel McMullen Bowling of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter, Morgan Tierney Bowling Jordan Montague of Anderson; grandson, Jaeden Bowling of Anderson; mother, Viola Bowling of Anderson; sister, Brenda Ken Crisp of Anderson; brothers, Earl Bowling and Johnny Bowling, both of Anderson; mother-in-law, Mayola Perdiew of Anderson and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father; brothers, Billy Bowling and Michael Bowling; and his father-in-law, Lee F. Perdiew.
