South Ogden – Our sweet mom, Shirley Rae Hartley Mendenhall, 90, took her last breath with family present while being cared for by the great staff at Barrington Place Care Center on January 7, 2022. And a special thanks to Inspiration Home Health and Hospice for their loving care and understanding during Mom’s last six months. We are grateful and fortunate to have had her in our lives for so many years.
She was born June 5, 1931 in Ogden, Utah to Cyril Hubert and Lillian Lavina Larson Hartley. She graduated from Ogden High School and on May 29, 1948, married Keith Jensen Mendenhall. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1964.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held several positions in the church and later jointly served a service mission with her husband, Keith. Shirley worked as a bookkeeper for Keith’s business and cared for her family and home. She was very artistic and creative. She loved sewing, quilting, crafts and especially gardening. She also loved decorating for the holidays and making Christmas breakfast for the family.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Keith (2008). Surviving are her five children, Shari (Steve deceased 2019) Sylvester, Debra (Ken) Iverson, Thomas (Kris) Mendenhall, Cindy (Gary) Palmer and Rebecca (Jeff) Olsen. Shirley and Keith were blessed with and enjoyed many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding Shirley in death were her parents and four of her siblings – Lynn Cyril Hartley, Nelda Hartley Hadley, Afton Hartley Wilson and Verle Larsen Hartley. Shirley has one surviving sister, Erma Hartley Wilson.
