She spent her youth in Hamburg, Lake Village, and Portland, AR; Highland Park, Highwood, and Fort Sheridan, IL; South Haven, MI; and Houston, TX.
During and after The Great Depression, she lived with her mother, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Her beauty, brains, poise, and sense of humor made her a standout, who excelled in her school work and made friends easily.

While working at the Rural Electric Administration in Hamburg, she met her future husband, Rex G. Kervin of Parkdale, AR, when he came to the office to pay his bill. He was late for their first date, and Mrs. Shirley let him know her expectations going forward.
In 1955, the couple settled in Rayville, LA with their three children: Rex Jr., Dana, and David. Rex established himself as co-owner of the John Deere dealership, Kervin and Ware. Their family expanded with the birth of Kelly in 1958 and Leslie in 1960.
Mrs. Shirley’s interests included art, ceramics, gardening, and homemaking. She enjoyed travel and road trips with Dana, Kelly, Leslie, Kim, and Kristin, and her morning rituals of working crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, and watching the birds gather at her bird feeders. She loved creating beauty in her gardens and watching her yard work grow to fruition.
Her gifts and talents continued to be put to good use when helping her grandchildren and great grandchildren with their homework and school projects.
Her home and refrigerator were always open to family who gathered there every holiday for delicious meals.
