Shirley Mae (Uttecht) Gast, 79, of Ankeny, died on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
Shirley, the daughter of Hertha (Grimm) and Elmer Uttecht, was born on January 7, 1943, in Norfolk, Nebraska. She graduated from Norfolk Senior High School in 1961 and attended Norfolk Junior College. On June 30, 1962, Shirley was united in marriage with Ronald W. Gast in Norfolk, Nebraska. They moved to Newton in 1969, and Shirley worked as a secretary for the Jasper County Attorney’s Office for over 30 years. Shirley was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary and an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Kansas City Chiefs. She also enjoyed camping at Lake Red Rock and at the Iowa State Fair and loved cocktail hour
Shirley is survived by her son, Jeff (Heidi) Gast of Ankeny; grandsons, Wesley A. Gast (Natalie Goyette) of Solon and Jacob A. Gast of Ankeny; and sister, Sandra (Don) Humphrey of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ronald in 2000.
Shirley’s family would like to thank the Bridges of Ankeny, Comfort Care, and the Critical Care Unit at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center who took extraordinary care of Shirley towards the end of her life.
