Shirley Ann Jones – Sims Born August 31, 1937, Shirley was born to parents Inez Lyons and Earl Jones in Kansas City Missouri and made her ancestral transition May 15, 2022 at 5:15 pm. She graduated from Lincoln High and was a very popular and very skilled seamstress. Shirley went on to graduate from Kansas State College of Pittsburgh’s Teaching School where she pledged AKA and held the office of Dean of Pledges. Shirley’s teaching career began in South Dakota and then Denver, Colorado where she taught at Malley Elementary, Northglenn CO. Shirley would continue her educational pursuits and career in Higher Ed as a Career/Education Counselor with Community College of Denver; Coordinator, Women’s Center at Metropolitan State College; McRel International, Clayton Preschool before founding Wee Villagers Learning Center (Birth-5yrs, a family endeavor). Shirley was also engaged in community pursuits: Co-founder of Black Women for Political Action (10 other women), Co-Founder of North East Women’s Center (Hazel Whitsett, Mildred Pitts Walter), Co-Founder, Roosevelt Hill Creative Freedom School; Appointed by Governor Lamm to the Colorado Commission on Women; Organizer of Women/Victims of Violence Seminar; Co-Founder of Western States Black Women in Business Conference, As an entrepreneur she and former husband (late Ed Sims) founded the first Black-owned bakery “Shabazz Bakery – The Bread Basket” in North Denver.
