SHIRLEY ILENE DANENBERG- Shirley Ilene Danenberg, 96, passed away December 23, 2020. She was born August 3, 1924 in Sears, Michigan to Ray and Emma (Berg) Dair. Her parents preceded her in death, as well as a brother Larry H. Dair.
Shirley married Harold D. Danenberg February 23, 1968 who passed away February 28, 2005 after 37 years of a full, and happy wonderful life. They enjoyed traveling and lived in many of different States before returning to Roswell, Harold’s hometown.
Survivors include a son, Dennis J. Pepe and wife Patti, of Brownsville, TX; a daughter, Carol Campbell and husband Jim of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Stepchildren, Sallie A. Danenberg of San Jose, California; Susan J. Meyers and husband Harry of Fort Worth, TX; Harold (Dan) Danenberg III and wife Vangie of Fort Worth, TX; Patrick J. Danenberg and wife Laurie of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Also surviving her are 11 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren.
Shirley was raised in Flint, Michigan and graduated from Grand Blanc High School, Grand
Blanc, Michigan in 1943. She was on the Varsity Basket Ball team, Varsity Marching Band, and the Glee Club.
She served in the Women’s Army Corps during W.W. II, taking her basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, where she learned how to drive and field strip 1-ton trucks. From Basic Training she was stationed at Rumulus Air Force Base, Michigan and later transferred to Wilmington Air Force Base in Delaware.
Shirley enjoyed working with the public and was a waitress for 20 years, before becoming a school bus driver so she could be with her children during the years they were in school and have the same time off as they did. She drove for 8 yrs. in Tinley Park and Palos Park, Illinois; 5 years in Mesa, Arizona, and 1 year in Farmington, New Mexico. She drove buses seating anywhere from 18 to 83 passengers.
She met Harold while he was working in Aurora, IL. She loved sailing their boat (The Sonador) on the many lakes in Arizona and on beautiful Lake Tahoe in Nevada. She and Harold enjoyed camping, panning for gold, and traveling, having traveled the length and breath of Mexico’s Baja California several times with their close friends, the Hansons and driving the Al-Can Highway from Fairbanks. She also enjoyed bowling and won many trophies and went to the Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1973.
Shirley’s hobbies included sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She was a Past Worthy Matron of The Order of the Eastern Star, Roswell # l0. She was a volunteer in the Gift Shop at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center from 1996 until 2019.
She said, “Harold and my children were the best part of my life”.
