Shirley Mae Hughes was born to Oressie and Lee Harris on June 17, 1940, and was the youngest of six children. She grew up in Matador, TX where she met and married Floyd Hughes. From that union, they had 5 children: Sharon Edwards, Terry Hughes, Michael Hughes, Sandra Hughes, and Renea Hughes. In 1961, she moved to Denver, CO where she enjoyed a 35-year career in grocery management and, went on to spend 14 more years working with kids with disabilities for Denver Public Schools. She was loved by many of those who came in contact with her, developing life-long friendships that she cherished until the end.
