Mrs. Hill was born May 11, 1937 in Lynchburg, VA to the late James and Patty Roach Henry. She departed this life June 5, 2015 at Decatur Morgan Hospital.
Mrs. Shirley Hill attended and graduated from Fredrick Douglas High School in Baltimore, Maryland. She retired from the Lawrence County Board of Education after 30 plus years. She was truly a bridge builder for many students. During Shirley’s employment as a teacher’s aide working at Tennessee Valley and East Lawrence Elementary Schools, she supported the teachers and students by making outfits for Social Studies projects, cheerleaders’ outfits, holiday programs and plays. Shirley never said “no” when asked to complete a task that she knew would help someone.
Shirley was blessed with a military man. She met Nelson as a very young girl, while he was stationed at an army base in Virginia. They traveled the world together. Some of their travel locations were: Ft. Mead, Maryland, Anchorage, Alaska, Vietnam, Salt Lake City, Utah, Germany (twice), and Ft. Hood, Texas. The only places Nelson felt were unsafe for Shirley to travel with him were Korea and Thailand.
Shirley was a member of Bethlehem Church. Years ago, she worked with the youth choir. She was a gifted seamstress who loved sewing and knitting. Shirley made several outfits for newborn babies in the church, choir robes were made also free of charge. Most times when a church member expired, Shirley would bake a cake and carry it to the church for the family. She also baked cakes for her co-workers. Her cakes were delicious and enjoyed by her many friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by: her husband, Nelson Hill of 51 years; her parents; six brother, William, Eugene, Bernard, Raymond, Lionel, and Kyle; two sisters, Earnestine and Thelma.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a sister, Selma Davidson, Baltimore, Maryland; a precious niece, Patricia (Horace) Thompson Lynchburg, VA; one goddaughter, Troy (Vance) McKinght of Baltimore, MD; one godson, Jamel (Kelli) Owens, Madison, AL; two sisters-in-law, Milene Owens, Hillsboro, AL., and Mimmie Henry of VA. and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Special thanks to Sonny and Nell Owens, Ann and Thomas Williams and Dr. Jewel Satchel for their devoted friendship and compassion shown to our loved one.
