Mrs. Shirley Cornelia Welch was the youngest of three girls born to Geneva Summers and Cornelius Turner. She was born in Trinity, North Carolina on October 9, 1922. She attended St. Mary’s United Methodist Church with her family. She left North Carolina to live in Harlem, New York and later settled in Detroit, Michigan where she was united in marriage to Paul Welch, Jr. ( who preceded her in death.) and raised her family and attended church. She made her transition on May 28th 2011 to be with God. Shirley joined Baber Memorial AME Church on September 5, 1964 under the leadership of Rev. Joseph E. Raspberry. She served as a stewardess for 30 years, sung on the Gospel and Senior Choir where she was the correspondent secretary for both. She was president of Pastor Aid, President of the Willing Workers, Assistant Secretary for the Missionary Society, Class Leader, and worked on the Trustee and Steward Board. She was a very active member. She especially liked working with the youth and started the junior stewardess board. She joined St. Mary United Methodist Church on her relocation to High Point, N.C. to renew her religious roots from her childhood were she attended faithfully until her illness prevented her from attending.

She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Mildred Swain ( Rev. James) High Point, N.C., Jann E. Hull ( Walter) Garden City, Michigan, Ledra C. Welch-Walker ( Reginald) Jamestown, N.C, Paul Welch, Jr. III (preceded her in death),two step-daughters: Barbara Wiley Detroit, Michigan and Pauline Felton Detroit, Michigan, three brothers Frank Turner, High Point, N.C. , Cornelius Turner, Cleveland, Ohio, and grandchildren: Theresa , Mardell, Jerard, Danielle, Kiira, and Paityn, and great-grandchildren, Jeraime and Graigory.
