Shirley Beckwith Willcox departed this life on August 4, 2017 at the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford. She was the beloved wife of the late Alfred Burton Willcox.
She was born April 16, 1925 in New Haven CT, daughter of the late Orville Shephard Beckwith and Mildred Bissell Beckwith.
She earned a BS in Education, specializing in Teaching of Individuals in Elementary Special Education, from New Haven State Teachers College (now Southern Connecticut University) in 1948, and later a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education from George Washington University in DC. She taught Special Education in the New Haven schools from 1948 to 1953, then 20 years in Bethesda, MD before retiring in 1990.
