Shirley Ann (Cunningham) D’Esposito – our loving mother and grandmother (“G.G.”) and native of New Orleans – passed away peacefully late Saturday, April 18th, in the city she loved, with her children at her side. She grew up on Music Street with her sister Evelyn and four brothers James, Charles, Henry and John.
Shirley took to the sounds of her birthplace.
A loving mother and wife, Shirley moved across the country with her “Yankee” partner and husband, Stephen Jr. (deceased). They traveled from New Orleans to New York, Cincinnati to Chicago and then made a few additional moves from North (NY) to South (Orleans) where they “retired” to a French Quarter stall. From this family adventure they built a life.
In the early years they kept their children (Dana, Stephen III, Jamie, Jody and Drew) closer than most—all seven of us bounced around Orleans, Jefferson and Gretna in a noisy, tan, German bug (of the Volkswagen type). Over the years the cars changed but the music never did.
We now “know what it means to miss [Shirley] in New Orleans.” We love you mom. We love you G.G.
Honor Shirley’s life. Sing a song. Light a candle. Say a prayer at St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter, or your place of worship.
