Shirley Ann (Carter) Burks, 79, passed away at her residence in New Whiteland on Tuesday Oct. 6, 2015 surrounded by family and friends.
She was born Oct. 5, 1936 in Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky to the late Sam H. and Onie L. (Strode) Carter.
She married Lowell Dewayne Burks on Nov. 19, 1957; they were married for 56 years.
Shirley was employed with Clark Pleasant Schools as a bus driver for over 20 years, retiring in 2003.
She was a member of the Red Hat Society and New Whiteland Baptist Church.
She bowled for many years in the Franklin Bowling league and was a co-founder of the Whiteland Lassie League. She coached and played softball for several years.
Survivors include two daughters, Carla (Don) Phelps and Pam Farr both of New Whiteland, sister, Joyce Hume of Tompkinsville, Ky, two brothers, Kenneth Carter and Louis (Betty Jo) Carter both of Tompkinsville, Ky, four grandchildren, Kim (Daniel) Humston, Kevin Phelps, Matt (Leni) Farr and Jena Farr and four great-grandchildren, Tyler Powers, Aubrey Humston,Carter Humston and Ariane Santana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lowell Burks, an infant daughter, Deborah Burks and two brothers, Charles Carter and Bill Carter.
